Borderline Personality Disorder Overview

Borderline personality disorder is an ongoing pattern of unstable relationships, varying moods, issues regarding self-image, and often erratic/disruptive behaviors. These issues impact nearly every aspect of a person’s life, disrupting family and social relationships, school/work, and overall ability to regulate emotions. It affects roughly 2% of the population and is more prevalent in females.

People with BPD also tend to be extreme and intense in their relationships. An individual who is seen as a friend one day may be considered an enemy or traitor the next. These shifting feelings can lead to intense and unstable relationships. Even with family members, individuals with BPD are sometimes highly sensitive to rejection, reacting with dramatic fashion to what most people would consider “little things”. It has been characterized as extreme sensitivity, as with an exposed nerve ending. Small things can trigger intense reactions.
